I am an artist of Canadian and Serbian origin based on the unceded territories of the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) nation in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang (montreal). My practice focuses mainly on printmaking and photography.
The impetus behind my work comes from my personal and continuous struggle against mental illness and addictions. I am particularly interested in the representation, in the social space, of drug addicts, the mentally ill and other marginalized groups, and how this representation can fuel ostracism, stereotypes, and even disdain.
The dehumanizing effect of these representations also influences public policy, leading, for example, to the intervention of law enforcement to replace highly defunded public mental health services and community organizations.
The visual dialogue in which I engage is a counter-discourse. My work aspires to reveal what is hidden, to give a voice to the speechless, to inspire empathy for the invisible and to overcome shame.
